Ozone Action Days
AUSTINTOWN -- The Eastgate Regional Council of Governments has declared today through Thursday as Ozone Action Days in the Mahoning Valley.
Eastgate said that during those days, high levels of ozone in the Valley may worsen respiratory conditions for local residents or cause shortness of breath during outdoor activities. Ozone, which can irritate eyes and lungs and damage crops, is formed by chemical reactions under specific atmospheric conditions.
In the next three days, high temperatures and winds that bring pollutants into the area are expected to help create ozone. Eastgate is asking Valley residents to avoid filling their cars or using gas-powered lawnmowers until after 7 p.m., and to carpool to help combat ozone creation.
Ozone levels are expected to decrease later in the week, when forecasts are calling for cloudy skies, rain and lower temperatures.
