SOCCER ROUNDUP Saturday's games

MLS
MetroStars 1, Galaxy 0
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Mike Magee's goal in the 65th minute gave the MetroStars a victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy. Paul Grafer, filling in for Tim Howard, had four saves as the MetroStars (6-3-2) snapped a two-game losing streak in a game played in heavy rain at Giants Stadium. Kevin Hartman made 10 saves for the defending MLS Cup champion Galaxy, who fell to 2-5-5. Hartman didn't have a chance on Magee's fourth goal of the season, which came with the MetroStars on a counterattack. Mark Lisi took a pass and then found a wide-open Magee cutting through the box for a one-on-one chance. Magee put his shot into the left side of the net against a helpless Hartman, who was playing for a shot to the right. Grafer made the goal stand, making two good saves on Alex Pineda Chacon in the final 15 minutes.
Wizards 4, Fire 2
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Preki scored a goal and assisted on three others as the Kansas City Wizards beat the Chicago Fire. Damani Ralph scored the game's first goal in the eighth minute for Chicago (5-3-3), which had a two-game winning streak snapped. Kansas City (5-2-5) then took control as Preki assisted on goals by Jimmy Conrad in the 27th minute, Francisco Gomez in the 33rd minute and Alex Zotinca in the 42nd minute. Preki, who turns 40 on Tuesday, scored a goal in the 70th minute from the penalty spot. Chicago's Evan Whitfield tripped Kansas City's Igor Simutenkov in the penalty area and the referee awarded a penalty kick to Kansas City.
United 1, Revolution 1
WASHINGTON -- Hristo Stoitchkov's first goal as a member of D.C. United earned a 1-1 tie with the New England Revolution. Stoitchkov, acquired from Chicago in an off-season trade, erased a 1-0 deficit in the 31st minute as United exploited a poor clearing attempt. Marco Etcheverry controlled the loose ball and passed left to Galin Ivanov, who saw Stoitchkov making a run down the left wing. Ivanov fed Stoitchkov, who converted a hard, rising shot from just inside the penalty area. D.C., deprived of its first two-game winning streak of the season, remained unbeaten (2-0-4) at RFK Stadium.
WUSA
Courage 1, Breakers 0
BOSTON -- Erin Baxter scored her first goal in 45 career games as the Carolina Courage climbed out of the WUSA basement by beating the first-place Boston Breakers. After winning the Founders Cup in 2002, Carolina (4-5-2) started the season 0-4. But the Courage have now gone five straight games without a loss, and with the win pushed them past Philadelphia and San Jose into sixth place. Neither team generated much offense in the first 34 minutes of play, combining for just one shot on goal. But Baxter capped a Carolina surge in the 35th minute, knocking in a header off a corner kick from Brooke O'Hanley.
Spirit 4, Power 2
SAN DIEGO -- Julie Fleeting had two goals and an assist as the San Diego Spirit beat the New York Power to end a three-game losing streak. Fleeting scored in the 62nd minute to give the Spirit a 3-1 lead, and added her team-high sixth goal in the 91st. The victory moved San Diego (4-3-4) into a four-way tie for second place in the WUSA with New York, Atlanta and Washington. Anita Rapp scored in the 68th minute for the Power (5-6-1), who came in with a three-game winning streak.
