INTERLEAGUE PLAY White Sox lead crosstown series

The Sox have hit Cubs' starting pitching well all weekend.

CHICAGO -- Mark Buehrle won his second consecutive start following a nine-game losing streak, and his hitting was an unexpected plus for the Chicago White Sox as they beat the crosstown Cubs for a second straight day.
Buehrle pitched into the seventh inning and got his first major league RBI Saturday as the White Sox jumped to a big early lead again and held on for a 7-6 victory.
After falling behind 7-0, the Cubs scored twice to get within two in the seventh and could have had more. But a great relay throw from shortstop Jose Valentin cut down Damian Miller at the plate and kept the Cubs from having an even bigger rally.
After Eric Karros got his fourth straight hit in the eighth and Lenny Harris singled, the Cubs had first and second before Miller flied out on a nice sliding catch by right fielder Magglio Ordonez and Ramon Martinez popped out against Tom Gordon.
Billy Koch worked the ninth for his 10th save in 12 chances. He allowed an RBI single to Sammy Sosa, but pinch-runner Tom Goodwin was thrown out trying to steal second and Karros flied out to end it.
Joe Crede had two doubles and a single in his first three at-bats as the White Sox chased Cubs starter Matt Clement after 31/3 innings, ending his three-game winning streak.
On Friday, the White Sox knocked Cubs starter Shawn Estes out after one inning while taking a 6-0 lead en route to a 12-3 victory.
A day later they went ahead 7-0, and it was Buehrle who got them started.
Buehrle entered the game with one career hit in 16 at-bats (.091) but after working the count to 2-2 against Clement, he sent a two-out, run-scoring single up the middle for his first RBI to give the White Sox a 1-0 lead in the second. Willie Harris followed with a broken-bat single to make it a two-run lead.

Phillies 6, Red Sox 5, 13 innings
PHILADELPHIA -- Pinch-hitter Todd Pratt connected for a two-run homer in the 13th inning Saturday to lift Philadelphia.
Nomar Garciaparra tied a club record with six hits for the Red Sox, who blew three late leads.
Jim Thome hit a pair of game-tying homers, and Bobby Abreu also went deep for the Phillies.
An RBI double by Todd Walker -- who also homered twice -- and Garciaparra's sixth single of the day gave Boston a 5-3 lead in the 13th.
But Bobby Abreu drew a leadoff walk from Jason Shiell in the bottom half and scored on David Bell's one-out double.
Rudy Seanez (0-1) relieved, and Pratt sent a 1-0 pitch over the center-field wall for his first home run since Sept. 1 last season. He raised and pumped fist when the ball cleared the fence, then stumbled an nearly fell between first and second base.
Jose Mesa (3-4) got the win despite allowing three runs and five hits in two innings.
Pedro Martinez pitched seven sharp innings and left with a 2-1 lead, but the Boston bullpen had another major meltdown.
Garciaparra finished 6-for-6 with a walk. His drive off the right-center wall made it 5-3 in the 13th, but he stumbled rounding first and settled for another single.
He became the fourth Red Sox player to get six hits in a game, joining Jimmy Piersall (1953), Pete Runnels (1960) and current Boston broadcaster Jerry Remy (1981).
Kevin Millar tripled home Garciaparra in the top of the 12th -- a shallow fly badly misplayed by left fielder Jason Michaels -- to give Boston a 3-2 lead.
Thome connected on a 3-2 pitch from Shiell with two outs in the bottom half to tie it again.

Dodgers 4, Angels 2
LOS ANGELES -- Adrian Beltre hit a three-run homer to back a solid outing by Andy Ashby to give Los Angeles its 10th victory in 11 games.
The pitching-rich Dodgers, who entered the day tied for first place in the NL West with San Francisco, have won the first two games of the Freeway Series.
Eric Gagne pitched the ninth to earn his major league-leading 29th save and 37th in a row dating to last year. He allowed an RBI single to pinch-hitter Bengie Molina before retiring David Eckstein with two on to end it.
Beltre hit his first homer since April 30, highlighting a four-run first inning against John Lackey. Beltre's fifth homer of the season came after Daryle Ward singled home Los Angeles' first run with two outs.
Ashby (2-4) gave up four hits, including Brad Fullmer's ninth home run leading off the fifth. The right-hander struck out two and walked none in 51/3 innings.
