Ex-treasurer to repay cash through deal

MERCER, Pa. -- A former treasurer for the Shenango Township Volunteer Fire Department will have a chance to avoid prosecution on charges of theft and receiving stolen property by paying back nearly $1,000 in missing department funds.
Jacalyn Varga, 51, of Pulaski Road, Shenango Township, was charged with taking $967 in department funds in 2001.
She told authorities she had deposited the money in the bank, but the bank had no record of those deposits, authorities said.
Atty. William Moder, assistant Mercer County district attorney, said his office worked out a court-approved agreement whereby Varga will pay the money back and not be prosecuted. She must also pay court costs and related fees with the total coming to about $1,200.
Moder said Varga will pay off the debt on a monthly basis through the courts. Should she fail to complete those payments, she could still be prosecuted on the theft and receiving charges, he said.
