SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- An exiled Tibetan monk will discuss Tibetan Buddhist thought and concepts of meditation during a free lecture series Saturday and June 29 at Slippery Rock University.
Tulka Lamchen Gyalpo Rinpoche fled Tibet in 1959 when the Chinese invaded, settling in India and, eventually, New Jersey.
Lectures are 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m. both days in the University Union. Sponsors include the Sisters of Compassionate Wisdom, Friends of Tibet and Dzogchen Sangha of Pittsburgh.
Mount Carmel event
LOWELLVILLE -- The annual Mount Carmel Celebration will begin at 9 a.m. July 16 with a procession at the church grounds.
Mass will be at 10 a.m.
The festival will open at 6 p.m. and continue through July 19.
The baby doll dance will be at 11 p.m. July 16, 17 and 18; Zambelli fireworks will be July 19 at 11:30 p.m.
Ham-radio license class
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning Valley Amateur Radio Association will conduct classes from 7 to 9 p.m. each Wednesday for six weeks beginning July 16 at ITT Technical Institute, 1030 N. Meridian Road.
The classes will help students learn basic radio theory in preparation for taking a ham-radio license exam.
Students passing the exam will earn an entry-level license from the Federal Communications Commission.
License exams will be given Aug. 27 at the conclusion of the course to students taking the classes.
The classes are free, but students must buy a study guide for $15 at the first class.
