13-year-old Wie in Public Links quarterfinals
PALM COAST, Fla. (AP) -- Thirteen-year-old phenom Michelle Wie, playing with a bloody nose, won two matches at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship on Friday and advanced to the quarterfinals.
Wie, of Honolulu, will face reigning U.S. Amateur champion Becky Lucidi of Poway, Calif., this morning in the quarterfinals. The semifinals will follow immediately on the 6,068-yard, par-72 Ocean Hammock Golf Club course. The 36-hole final is Sunday.
The other quarterfinals will have medalist Virada Nirapathpongporn, of Thailand, against D'Rae Ward, of Weatherford, Texas; Aimee Cho, of Orlando, Fla., against Hannah Jun, of San Diego; and Tarah McNaughton, of Bradenton, Fla., will face Beth Allen, of San Diego.
Wie, a semifinalist in this event last year, was down 2 holes in her second-round match with Hwanhee Lee, of Los Angeles, after 13 holes. Wie was conceded a 4 1/2-foot eagle putt on the par-5 14th to get to 1-down and she won the next three holes for a 2-and-1 victory.
Wie beat Mayumi Motoyama, of Littleton, Colo., 5-and-4 in the third round.
Before she hit her second shot on the second hole against Motoyama, Wie's nose started bleeding. She was offered medical treatment but turned it down.
"I get it occasionally," Wie said of the bloody nose. "I think it's because I was tired. I get it when I'm tired. I'm pretty tired right now. My legs hurt."
