Penguins honored
YOUNGSTOWN -- Nine Youngstown State University student-athletes were named to the 2003 spring academic All-Horizon League team.
The YSU women's golf team placed three, with Gina Abruzzino, Lori Hatcher and Jennifer Grossi on the squad.
Baseball and men's track and field each placed two, with Adam Cox and Ty Turino and Kurt Michaelis and Nick Smith, respectively.
Alyson Finamore represented the YSU women's tennis program, while Beth Hochstetler was chosen from women's track and field.

Girard's Sopkovichbound for John Carroll
GIRARD -- Jennifer Sopkovich, an All-Ohio senior soccer standout for Girard High last season, will go to John Carroll University this year to study pre-medicine and continue her soccer career.
A three-time All-District performer who made the All-Metro Athletic Conference and All-Trumbull County first teams as a junior and senior, Sopkovich holds three school goal-scoring records. She has the most career, season and game goals in school history.
Sopkovich also is co-valedictorian of her graduation class with a 4.5 grade-point average.
She also was an All-State track performer.
Lakeview goalkeeperchooses Mount Union
ALLIANCE -- Meghan Gilroy, a 2003 graduate of Lakeview High School, will continue her soccer career at Mount Union College this fall.
A goalkeeper, Gilroy was a three-year varsity letterwinner, the team Defensive Player of the Year in 2001 and a senior All-State selection in 2002.
Harding standoutdecides on Mount
ALLIANCE -- Eleni Halkias, the Most Valuable Player for the Warren Harding High girls tennis team last season, will attend Mount Union College and resume her tennis career.
Halkias made the All-Steel Valley Conference tennis teams as a sophomore and senior. She is a four-year letterwinner.
Eastman third
MIDDLEFIELD -- Carlie Eastman of Warren shot 43-45--88 as she placed third in the 16-19 division of the North Coast Junior Golf Tour on Thursday at Grandview Golf Club.
Mallory Wyderka of Olmsted Township finished first with 39-43--82.
Hubbard's Hassellearns PAC praise
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College senior softball player Tami Hassell, a Hubbard native, has been named to the Presidents' Athletic Conference academic honor roll for the spring 2003 semester.
The honor roll features student-athletes who have earned a grade-point average of 3.8 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
Other Thiel student-athletes to make the honor roll were freshman baseball player Rich McNeal of East Palestine and freshman Ben Wheeler in track and field and senior Jessica Peterson in softball.
MVS wins title
COLUMBUS -- The Mahoning Valley Select U-16 boys soccer team won its division is the 18th annual Jarosi-Willis Memorial Cup on June 7-8.
The MVS boys beat GFC Arsenal of Columbus (3-0), Celtics United of Zanesville (3-0) and Grand Lake United of Lima (9-0) to advance to the championship match. In the championship match, MVS defeated previously-unbeaten Worthington United of Worthington (2-0).
The MVS boys' relentless offense scored 17 goals, and between a strong defense and goalie Andrew Loudon no goals were given up. In the championship match, Kevin Miller kicked a remarkable 94-yard goal.

Commission: USOCneeds restructured
WASHINGTON -- An independent commission proposed that the U.S. Olympic Committee, a "constant source of embarrassment," answer to a much smaller oversight board under a permanent boss and report annually to Congress.
Commissioners ended their five-month review of the scandal-plagued committee by recommending a wholesale restructuring.
