GREENVILLE, PA. Council accepts letters of interest for open positions



Council will make most of the appointments in January.
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Borough council is accepting letters from residents interested in serving on various commissions and boards.
Letters should be sent to the borough manager at 125 Main St., Greenville, Pa. 16125.
The code board of appeals has an immediate opening. The term is from the date of appointment to Dec. 31, 2008.
Applicants must be either a borough resident, or a nonresident who owns property in borough. The board meets as needed to hear appeals concerning building code violations.
What's opening up
The following positions will open Dec. 31, and council will appoint the new members Jan. 5, 2004:
UPlanning commission: one position, term will expire Dec. 31, 2008. Must be willing to learn the zoning and building code laws and get involved in the planning process. The commission meets monthly to discuss long-range plans for the development of Greenville, including industrial development, roads, bypasses and pertinent ordinances.
UZoning hearing board: one position, term will expire Dec. 31, 2006. Must be willing to learn zoning laws and make decisions regarding them. The board meets as needed to hear requests for zoning variances from those wishing to do construction or renovations to buildings that don't meet zoning requirements.
UCivil service commission: one position, term will expire Dec. 31, 2006. Must be willing to learn the applicable laws. The commission meets as needed to administer tests to applicants for positions in the borough police and fire departments, or to personnel in line for a promotion in those departments.
UWater authority: one position, term will expire Dec. 31, 2008. Must be willing to learn the applicable laws and get involved with operations of the water plant. The authority is a nonprofit group responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the water plant and distribution of water to borough residents. It is also responsible for setting the water rates within the borough.
UAirport commission: six positions, terms to expire Dec. 31, 2004. Must be willing to learn Federal Aviation Commission laws and requirements. The commission meets twice a month and deals directly with the airport management personnel and PennDOT personnel. It is responsible for finding the funding for airport improvements and operations.
