Catholic newspaper winsaward for terror article
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Catholic Exponent has received a first-place award for "Best Editorial on a National or International Issue," written by editor Lou Jacquet.
The award in the category for diocesan newspapers with a circulation of 40,001 was given during the May 28-30 Catholic Press Association convention in Atlanta. Some 300 journalists attended.
The winning editorial, "War on Terrorism Must Not Degenerate into Vigilantism" was published in the Sept. 27, 2002, Exponent.
The award marked the seventh time in the past eight years that the Exponent has been honored at the CPA with a total of 11 awards in eight categories.
Commenting on the editorial, the judges wrote: "Jacquet counsels caution at a time when emotion could easily get the upper hand. He avoids preachiness and emphasizes that we are a nation of laws. This editorial, with its eloquent way of stating things ("the killers become the killed") argues its point well."
