Storm 61, Mercury 60
PHOENIX -- Lauren Jackson made two free throws with 24 seconds remaining. Phoenix had a chance for the win, but Tamicha Jackson missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer. Jackson had 23 points for the Storm (4-4), while Kamiloa Vodichkova added 12 points. Anna DeForge led the Mercury (2-8) with a career-high 22 points and Adrian Williams added 13. Phoenix went up 60-59 with 2:54 remaining on a basket by DeForge. After the teams exchanged scoreless possessions, Jackson grabbed a rebound and was fouled with 24 seconds to go. Williams missed a shot in the lane with six seconds remaining and the rebound resulted in a jump ball. Seattle committed a violation on the jump ball giving the ball to the Mercury, but Jackson missed at the buzzer.
Shock 87, Sparks 78, OT
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Swin Cash scored 20 points as Detroit beat Los Angeles to snap at 18 games the longest winning streak in the seven-year history of the WNBA. The two-time defending champion Sparks won their final nine games of last season and started this one 9-0. That tied the Sparks' own 2-year-old mark for the fastest start in league history. Ruth Riley made two free throws with 3.7 seconds remaining to tie it at 76, then Detroit scored the first seven points in overtime. Tamecka Dixon led the Sparks with 22 points.
Liberty 70, Monarchs 61
NEW YORK -- Vickie Johnson scored 18 points, Becky Hammon 17 and Crystal Robinson 16 -- including four 3-pointers -- for New York. Yolanda Griffith had 21 points and 16 rebounds for the Monarchs, who also got 17 points from Tangela Smith.
Comets 77, Lynx 68
MINNEAPOLIS -- Tina Thompson scored a season-high 30 points for injury-depleted Houston. The victory snapped a four-game road losing streak for the Comets, who are missing Cynthia Cooper and Sheryl Swoopes. Katie Smith scored 27 points for the Lynx, now 1-14 all time against the Comets.
Fever 71, Sting 60
INDIANAPOLIS -- Tamika Catchings had 29 points and 10 rebounds, and Natalie Williams scored 16 points for Indiana. Catchings fell three points shy of her career high and had her third double-double of the season. She was 8-for-17 from the field, breaking out of a scoring slump that saw fail to score more than 13 points in each of the last three games. Catchings, who was shaken up after a midcourt collision with Charlotte's Dawn Staley, hit a 3-pointer with 6:05 remaining to give Indiana a 56-47 lead. Two free throws by Catchings and a turnaround jumper by Williams made it 60-52 and the Fever cruised from there. Allison Feaster led Charlotte with 21 points, while Tammy Sutton-Brown had 18 points and Staley added 10 assists.
