DETROIT Tribe's homers lift Sabathia to victory

Cleveland hit three home runs in a five-run fourth inning to beat Detroit 7-4.
DETROIT (AP) -- C.C. Sabathia felt he let his teammates down early in the game.
Luckily for him, they gave him another chance.
After Sabathia couldn't hold a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Cleveland Indians hit three homers as part of a five-run fourth and went on to a 7-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night.
"The homers gave me a big lift," Sabathia said. "When we score runs, I want to come in and shut the other team down that inning. We scored a run in the first inning and I gave up two in the first, so I was a little upset about that. But we got those three home runs in the fourth, I came out and did a pretty good job keeping them in check."
Sabathia (6-3) allowed three runs (two earned) and six hits in six innings. He struck out six.
End four-game skid
The Indians snapped a four-game losing streak, and handed the Tigers their 10th loss in 11 games. Cleveland is 6-2 against Detroit this season, but just 21-39 against the rest of the majors.
"We try not to think about things like that," Sabathia said. "We just try to worry about our own team."
The Tigers, though, have definitely noticed.
"That's a team we should match up well against," Detroit manager Alan Trammell said.
The three homers -- by Ben Broussard, Casey Blake and Matt Lawton -- were the first time the Indians had hit three in an inning since they did it against the Tigers on May 30, 2002.
"We did a really good job of putting a big inning together," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "We had some quality at-bats where our guys battled and fouled off some tough pitches."
Tigers led early
Detroit led 2-1 after three innings, but Adam Bernero (1-9) fell apart in the fourth. Milton Bradley led off with a single, and Broussard followed with a homer into the right field bullpen.
Five pitches later, Blake homered over both fences in left field to make the score 4-2. After Josh Bard singled, Bernero retired the next two batters, but Lawton chased him from the game by lining a 3-0 pitch into the bullpens. The five-run inning was Cleveland's second biggest of the year.
"I've seen Adam a couple times, and I don't think he had his great stuff today," Lawton said. "After the first couple pitches he threw me, I thought maybe his arm was hurting, but he stayed out there and battled."
Bernero lost for the third start in a row, allowing six runs, six hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings.
"I just really didn't have a good feel for the ball today," Bernero said. "I was just skating by for three innings, but I wasn't hitting my spots, and they eventually caught up with me. Major league hitters aren't going to miss those pitches."

The Tigers sent starting catcher Brandon Inge to Triple-A Toledo and designated outfielder Ernie Young for assignment. To replace them, they purchased catcher A.J.
