After a call from clerk, Girard police arrest N.C. man

GIRARD -- An alert store clerk and a police officer foiled an armed robbery Tuesday night with the arrest of a suspect.
Daniel E. Wright, 47, of Varina, N.C., is being held on charges of attempted robbery, criminal damaging, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and a possession of a weapon by a felon.
He was scheduled for arraignment today in municipal court.
According to a police report, a woman working at Girard Book & amp; News called police at 8:30 p.m. to tell authorities a man in a trench coat was standing outside the store.
When Patrol Office Tim O'Leary arrived, the clerk pointed out the man hiding in some bushes. Wright stood up and began walking away.
O'Leary stopped Wright, who began to struggle, but the officer wrestled him to the ground and subdue him.
The officer found a loaded double-barreled shotgun under Wright's coat and two shotgun shells in a pocket.
After being put in the cruiser, Wright was subdued with pepper spray when he tried to get out by kicking the car windows.
Wright told police he planned to go into the store because he had been drinking and taking drugs all day.
Police Capt. Frank Bigowsky asked any law enforcement agencies or others with knowledge of similar robberies to contact him or Detective John Norman, (330) 545-3526.
