YOUNGSTOWN -- Marcus Bradley had lived in Youngstown only about a year before he was gunned down on a South Side street in November 2001.
It took police nearly twice that long to catch the men they suspect killed him.
Edward Dubose, 21, of Albert Street, and Ceyanie Dubose, 26, of Norwood Street, were arraigned Tuesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, where each is charged with Bradley's aggravated murder.
The men, who authorities said are cousins, pleaded innocent. Their trial is scheduled for July 23 before Judge James C. Evans.
Police found Bradley shot to death Nov. 12, 2001, at Mercer and Hoffman streets. Bradley had moved to Youngstown from Minnesota about a year before he was killed, according to Jay Macejko, assistant county prosecutor.
Lt. Robin Lees, public information officer, said that at the time, police had little evidence to go on, so the investigation was difficult.
But while recently investigating another crime, agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms gleaned new information that led police to the Duboses. They were secretly indicted last week by a county grand jury.
"It just goes to show that we don't forget," Lees said. "We're not going to let a killer walk around out there if we've got enough evidence to prosecute."
Other details
Lees said the Duboses had been suspects in Bradley's death for some time, but police didn't have enough evidence to seek indictments until the recent information from ATF.
Macejko said authorities believe Bradley's death was linked to the Oct. 31, 2001, killing of 23-year-old Hyland Burton, who was found shot several times on Tod Lane.
"It's long been our belief that Marcus Bradley had something to do with the Burton homicide," Macejko said. "Burton's death may have, in some way, been a retaliatory murder."
Besides the aggravated murder charge, Edward Dubose also was arraigned Tuesday on unrelated drug charges, to which he pleaded innocent.
He pleaded guilty last week to another set of unrelated drug charges, for which he is to be sentenced July 31 by Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of common pleas court.
