The Mahoning Valley Scrappers open the 2003 New York-Penn League season tonight, when they visit the Batavia (N.Y.) Muckdogs at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WNIO-AM (1390). The Scrappers' home opener is Friday against the Auburn Doubledays.
Ellwood City wins title
Aaron Lillibridge hit a run-scoring single in the top of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie and Kevin Ricciuti pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, as Ellwood City downed Tamaqua 3-1 Monday to capture the PIAA Class AA state baseball title. C5.
