McDONALD --The school board approved Monday borrowing $390,470 to increase the size of the gymnasium at the elementary school under construction on Seventh Street.
The board decided to make the gym the same size as the high school gym and to add locker rooms and seating for 150 spectators.
Treasurer Thomas Radabaugh said furniture is already being moved out of Roosevelt Elementary School, which is expected to be demolished as early as mid-July.
Some of the old furniture is being made available to village residents, because new furniture will be bought for the new elementary school.
Residents interested in picking up an old student desk or chair or some other keepsake can go to the Roosevelt building Wednesday from 1 to 5 p.m., using the Illinois Avenue entrance.
Call the administration office at (330) 530-8051.
The new elementary school and the newly renovated high school will be open for tours from 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. July 4.
The board also hired four summer tutors at $17 an hour.
Staci Conley, Judy Fedyski, Donna Litch and Connie Morris conduct special classes for fourth-graders who have failed the reading portion of the state proficiency tests twice.
Other intervention classes for fourth- through sixth-graders who failed at least three portions of the tests and for third-graders who are reading considerably below their grade level also will be held.
