SPRINGFIELD TWP. Historical facts

Springfield Township was founded by Peter and Margaret Musser, who traveled here in a wagon train headed west from Lancaster, Pa.
Petersburg, which was named after Peter Musser, was at one time the largest stagecoach stop between Pittsburgh and Cleveland.
New Middletown, which was historically a part of the township though now a separate entity, got its name from its location as the middle point of an old stagecoach route between Cleveland and Pittsburgh.
New Springfield was named after a spring found in a field. The spring is now located in the basement of the Springfield Inn on the square in New Springfield.
