Cortland council OKs bid for street project

CORTLAND -- As construction crews continue work on South High and Fowler streets, city council approved Thomas Pallotta and Sons' bid Monday night to begin construction on West Main Street.
Service director Paul Makosky said the South High Street project should be completed sometime in July, possibly before West Main Street's construction begins during the third week of July. He doesn't expect the Fowler project to cause problems with any of the other construction jobs.
Thomas Pallotta and Sons' bid of $583,978.40 was lower than the only other bid of $590,718.35 from Parella-Pannunzio. Both contractors are from Youngstown.
Makosky said the improvements on West Main Street might affect the annual car show, which is scheduled for July 20. He added that he will work with organizers of the car show so the inconveniences that the work causes is minimal.
Two residents complained at the meeting that the South High Street project is disrupting their daily lives.
The residents said the debris from the construction is being dumped at the lot next to their home, causing & quot;horrendous & quot; noises and excessive amounts of dust. & quot;I'm almost to the point of wanting to leave Cortland, and I've lived in Cortland all my life, & quot; one resident said.
Makosky said when he investigated the site he did not find anything illegal that council had the power to stop.
