INTERLEAGUE Hampton finally gets win as Braves end Moyer's streak, top Mariners, 3-1
Pitcher Mike Hampton won for the first time in more than a month.

SEATTLE -- Mike Hampton pitched two-hit ball into the eighth inning Saturday for his first victory in more than a month, and the Atlanta Braves beat the Seattle Mariners, 3-1.
The Braves snapped Seattle starter Jamie Moyer's seven-game winning streak. Moyer left with one out in the eighth after allowing an RBI double by Andruw Jones that made it 3-0. Gary Sheffield, who hit a one-out double, scored on the play.
Atlanta evened the series between the top teams in the majors at a game apiece. Greg Maddux pitches for the Braves (45-21) today, while Gil Meche goes for the Mariners (44-22).
Hampton (3-3) hadn't won since May 11, beating San Francisco 7-3. After that, he spiraled into a five-game stretch during which he went 0-2 with a 5.79 ERA over 231/3 innings.
John Smoltz, who took over with no outs and the bases loaded in the eighth, earned his major league-leading 26th save in 27 opportunities. It was only the second time this season he pitched two innings, the other coming April 13 at Florida.
Moyer (10-3) went 71/3 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs. His four walks equaled a season high, but his 10 victories still lead the majors.

Yankees 13, Cardinals 4
NEW YORK -- Jason Giambi hit a pair of two-run homers and Ruben Sierra and Raul Mondesi also connected as New York roughed up St. Louis.
Hideki Matsui drove in four runs, three on a first-inning double that got the rout started.
A day after Roger Clemens earned his 300th career victory and got his 4,000th strikeout, the Yankees won with hitting. New York built an 11-2 lead after four innings, and that let Andy Pettitte (6-6) coast.
Former Yankees star Tino Martinez did the only damage for the Cardinals, twice hitting two-run homers and drawing a big cheer from the crowd of 55,174 each time.
Matt Morris (7-4) leads the NL with four complete games, but the New York bats and the bad weather combined to chase him after just two outs.
With rain already falling and winds swirling as a storm approached, Matsui got the big hit. His bases-loaded double with two outs made it 3-0, and a pitch later the umpires called for the tarp.
Play resumed 1 hour, 27 minutes later, but Morris, who felt tightness behind his shoulder after his last start, did not return. Instead, manager Tony La Russa called on Brett Tomko, who was scheduled to start Monday at Milwaukee.
Tomko gave up an RBI single to Sierra in the first and basically took one for the team, absorbing a nine-run, 12-hit pounding over 51/3 innings. All four Yankees homers came against him.
Along with his two homers, Giambi singled and walked twice. He began the day with one homer at Yankee Stadium all season before connecting in the second and third innings. Giambi has three multihomer games this year and 22 in his career.

Athletics 5, Expos 4
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Scott Hatteberg hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning, and Eric Byrnes also homered as Oakland Athletics rallied to beat Montreal.
With the A's trailing 3-2, Mark Ellis was hit by a pitch leading off the eighth. Chris Singleton sacrificed and Byrnes singled, putting runners at the corners.
Hatteberg hit a 1-1 pitch from Luis Ayala (5-2) over the right-field fence for his first homer since May 4 at Yankee Stadium, a drought of 29 games and 121 at-bats. He has four this season.
"I don't consider myself a home run hitter," Hatteberg said. "I think it's kind of a byproduct when you're swinging the bat good. I haven't had a whole lot of luck."
Still, when runners are on he always seems to come through. Hatteberg is hitting .576 (15-for-26) with runners in scoring position and less than two outs.
He entered the game batting .180 (11-for-61) in his last 16 games to drop his average to .254. He hit .345 over the first 24 games.
Ricardo Rincon (3-3) struck out two in a perfect eighth for the win. Keith Foulke worked the ninth for his 16th save in 19 chances, allowing an RBI single to Edwards Guzman before retiring Ron Calloway with the bases loaded to end it.
Orlando Cabrera doubled twice, singled and scored three runs, and Calloway had two hits to break an 0-for-15 slump for the Expos.

Cubs 4, Blue Jays 2
TORONTO -- Chicago Cubs manager Dusty Baker didn't like it when Moises Alou tried to stretch a double into a triple -- until it worked.
Alou hit a two-run triple and scored on a throwing error as Mark Prior and the Cubs ended the Toronto Blue Jays' five-game winning streak.
Alou tripled into the gap in right-center in the first inning and scored when second baseman Orlando Hudson's relay throw hit him on the right elbow and rolled into foul territory.
Baker thought for sure Alou would be thrown out at third.
"I was like, 'Oh no!' " Baker said. "Then the ball got by and I was like, 'Way to go Mo!' "
Alou, who had one triple all last season, acknowledged he got lucky.
"I did it even knowing I was going to be in trouble," Alou said. "We scored three runs right there and it seemed to be enough to win the game."
Sammy Sosa missed his fourth straight game while serving a seven-game suspension for using a corked bat. The Cubs are 2-2 without their cleanup hitter, who did not accompany the team to Toronto.
