AUSTINTOWN -- The Rev. Carol A. Myers of Austintown was ordained as a deacon in the Church of the Nazarene on May 29 at First Church of the Nazarene in Canton. The service was led by General Superintendent Dr. Tallmadge Johnson and District Superintendent Dr. David Downs. She entered the ministry studies in 1996 and graduated in 2001. She specializes in music and children's ministries, and has served as the East Ohio District Children's Ministries director since 2000. She is the daughter of the Rev. Charles and Dorothy Ruby.
Monk to speak
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- An exiled Tibetan monk will summarize Tibetan Buddhist thought and introduce concepts of meditation to the public when he comes to Slippery Rock University. Tulka Lamchen Gyalpo Rinpoche will give a lecture series from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 28-29 in the University Union. He fled Tibet in 1959 when the Chinese invaded, settled in India and later moved to New Jersey.
75th anniversary
WARREN -- St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1346 Vernon Ave. N.W., is having three events to celebrate its 75th anniversary.
A Mass will celebrated at 10 a.m. July 13. A brunch will follow at Alberini's Restaurant.
The parish was founded in 1928 by Polish immigrants. Mass was first celebrated in a store front on Hall Avenue and then on North Street in a church built by the immigrants. In 1964, the present church, which by then represented many nationalities, was dedicated
At 7 p.m. June 29, Maureen Collins of Easy Street Productions will perform a free concert. Her repertoire includes Broadway tunes, folk songs and romantic ballads. An offering taken to benefit the N.E.E.D. organization.
At 7:30 p.m. July 26, the French Boy's Choir will perform. Founded in 1972, the choir is composed of about 50 boys and young men from educational institutions from Lille in northern France. The group has performed for the pope several times. Call (330) 393-0226 to make reservations for the brunch or to reserve seats for either concert.
Appointments announced
LOWELLVILLE -- Victory Christian Center has announced the recent appointments of two pastors.
The Rev. Laura L. Rowe, a Youngstown native, was appointed the junior high youth pastor. She attended the programs at Victory Christian Center (formerly Victory Assembly of God), was credentialed with the Assemblies of God and worked at Solid Rock Ministries in Toledo.
The Rev. Tom Crandall has been appointed director of student ministry at Victory. He's a native of Salt Lake City who moved here from Texas.
