HUBBARD -- Playmakers spelled the difference in the Trumbull County (Red Team) All-Stars' 42-20 romp past their Mahoning-Columbiana [White Team] counterparts Friday night at Hubbard High Stadium.
Quarterback Chris Settlemeire of Howland High was 6-for-7 passing for 111 yards and three touchdowns, in the 19th annual Jack Arvin Football Classic sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Coaches Association.
Halfback Julian Hayes from Brookfield rushed for 146 yards in 10 carries, including the first score of the game on a 63-yard dash, to also power the Red, which opened a 32-7 halftime lead.
Settlemeire, headed for the University of Toledo, and Hayes, who is going to Kent State, were performing behind an outstanding job from the offensive line.
Holes are there
"The offensive line came out and won the battle out front," Red coach Greg Lazzari of Champion said. "They [the backs] did a good job reading the line blocks. The holes were big enough for them to see."
Settlemeire connected for TD strikes to David Costas (13 yards), David Phillips (18) and Dustin Helle (20), while Settlemeire also ran for a two-point conversion.
"He [Settlemeire] is calm in the pocket," Lazzari said. "He reads coverages well."
Hayes, named the Red's Most Valuable Player, capitalized on his shifty moves and elusiveness that earned him extra yards when he appeared to be cornered by defenders.
"Julian is a hard runner with good vision," Lazzari said. "He has a lot of moves -- more than U-Hall."
Helle caught four passes in all for 90 yards, while Phillips had two receptions for 43 yards.
Tom Nemet, another Red quarterback, contributed 3-for-4 passing for 46 yards.
Red defense sparkles
The Red's defensive line virtually shut down the White's rushing game.
"They swarmed to the ball," Lazzari said.
The Red defense contributed a TD when Byron Wilson ran 5 yards with a fumble. Matt White also plunged in from the 1 while Mark Hofmeister kicked a 26-yard field goal.
"Playmakers were the big difference. The kids for them made great plays," White coach John Smith of Springfield said.
The White was led by quarterback Leo Sorice (Canfield), who was 13-for-20 passing for 199 yards and two TDs; and wide receiver Garrett Sevek (Salem), who caught two TD passes of 21 yards from Sorice and 27 yards from Jason Aikens (Austintown Fitch).
Sevek was named the White's Most Valuable Player.
Sorice's other TD throw was to tight end Freddie Gray of Leetonia covering 8 yards.
Aikens had 35 yards rushing in 12 carries.
