Funnel cloud reported
CORTLAND -- The National Weather Service in Cleveland reported an unconfirmed sighting of a funnel cloud at 9:05 p.m. Thursday near here.
An unconfirmed report means it was spotted by a member of the public rather than a member of law enforcement or a weather watcher.
A funnel cloud also was sited near Gustavus about 9:17 p.m. and it moved toward Crawford, Pa., the National Weather Service said. There were no reports of any tornado touchdowns.
In McDonald, high winds caused some damage at the local ice cream shop.
Tables were blown away and the sign at the Dairy Queen on East Marshall Road was damaged during Thursday's storms. No injuries were reported.
Police search for man
NILES -- Police are looking for a city man who within hours assaulted his girlfriend twice.
The 24-year-old Youngstown-Warren Road woman said her boyfriend broke into her apartment Wednesday evening and attacked her and a male friend, then returned around 7 a.m. Thursday and entered her apartment while she was sleeping, police reports say.
The woman had visible injuries from Thursday's attack, when the boyfriend punched and kicked her and threw her around the apartment, police said.
On both occasions, police searched the area for the man, but were unable to locate him.
Election complaint
McDONALD -- The Ohio Election Commission rejected a complaint by the mayor against the village solicitor during the May primary.
Three commission members reviewed a complaint by Mayor James Border alleging attorney William Roux placed illegal fliers in mailboxes throughout the village shortly before the May primary election. The fliers, which urged voters not to vote for Border, did not indicate who created or distributed them, which is against campaign law.
The commission voted 3-0 after a probable cause hearing Thursday to deny the complaint. Border can appeal.
New picnic tables
WARREN --Three local organizations have joined forces to bring two new picnic tables to the Social Security office.
Wil Harris of Congressman Tim Ryan's office coordinated the project for YouthBuild and the Social Security office.
Members of Trumbull County's YouthBuild program built the tables Wednesday and set them up Thursday.
The office's only picnic table was stolen two years ago. An employee replaced the table with one from her home, but that table was stolen last summer.
Home Depot, a national partner of YouthBuild, supplied the materials for the project.
