June 14 is Flag Day, designated as a national observance to the flag. Some interesting facts about the flag and the day include:
On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the stars-and-stripes pattern to make the national flag uniform.
The first Flag Day was celebrated June 14, 1877, the 100th anniversary of the flag.
In 1949, President Harry S. Truman signed legislation making Flag Day a day of national observance.
The flag is known as Old Glory, Stars and Stripes and the Star-Spangled Banner.
The 13 alternating red and white stripes represent the original 13 colonies, while the white stars on the field of blue represent each of the 50 states.
The last star was added to represent Hawaii in 1960.
Betsy Ross was 24 when she created the first national flag that featured the 13 stripes and 13 stars arranged in a circle.
