TRANSFER, Pa. -- An American Cancer Society volunteer has come up with a 10-week plan to raise money for the agency.
Dan Harkless, a project estimator/manager for B & amp;B Contractors and Developers of Youngstown, has organized a flea market/yard sale that will run 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for 10 Saturdays in a row beginning June 21.
The event will be held at the Reynolds Drive-In Theater on Pa. Route 18, about 12 miles north of the Route 18 exit on Interstate 80.
Harkless is a member of the "Sabino Family and Friends" Relay For Life team, which participates in the annual cancer society event held at Mercer. This year's relay is going on today.
Harkless said he got involved after his son-in-law, Marc Sabino, was diagnosed with cancer. Sabino has been cancer-free for the past two years, and the family and their friends continue to help raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Harkless' daughter and Marc's wife, Becky Sabino, is co-chairwoman of this year's Relay For Life.
Harkless said the plan is to operate a commercial flea market with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
Backing the effort
A spokeswoman for the Mercer County Unit of the American Cancer Society said the agency supports the effort.
Harkless said his relay team has already contacted numerous commercial vendors at other flea markets and expect to have as many as 100 show up for the first day Saturday. They will be charged a set-up fee for their space ($10 for a full space) and all of that money will go to the American Cancer Society.
Any Relay For Life team can participate at no cost, setting up their own tables to sell donated yard sale items they collect. They won't be charged any set-up fee and all of their proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society, Harkless said, adding that he hopes to get at least 10 of the nearly 40 teams at this year's relay to participate.
People visiting the flea market will be charged $1 to enter the grounds. Half of that will go to the American Cancer Society and the other half will go to the theater property owner as rent for the grounds, Harkless said.
