SHARON 2 police officers injured in struggle during arrest

SHARON, Pa. -- Police checking on a man apparently asleep at the wheel of a car in the 200 block of Mesabi Street wound up in a fight that left two officers and the man injured.
Police Chief Thomas Burke said an officer on patrol spotted Leotis Chambers, 32, of Hamilton Avenue apparently sleeping in the car around 3:20 a.m. Wednesday.
Chambers initially gave a false identification and appeared to be intoxicated, Burke said.
When police tried to arrest him on a charge of public drunkenness, Chambers began to fight with them, police said. Backup arrived and the struggle continued, with Chambers trying at one point to pull an officer's pistol from its holster, Burke said.
He was taken to the police station and placed in a cell but began to complain of back pain. He was taken to Sharon Regional Health System and then transferred to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, where a spokeswoman said this morning that he had been discharged.
Burke said two officers are off duty with injuries suffered in the fight, one with an injured leg and the other with an injured shoulder.
Chambers was charged with public drunkenness, resisting arrest, giving false identification, aggravated assault and simple assault. In addition, the Mercer County Domestic Relations office had issued a warrant for his arrest, Burke said.
