Search dogs were used to help find the senior citizen.
LIBERTY -- An 88-year-old man who walked away from his home Tuesday is recovering today in Forum Health Northside Medical Center.
Harold Rowbottom, who suffers from dementia, high blood pressure and a heart ailment, was found in the basement of his home at 3760 Logan Way on Wednesday afternoon.
The family reported him missing to police after he walked out of the house between 6 and 9 a.m. Tuesday, resulting in a search by police, firefighters and family.
Rowbottom's daughter, Faith Harnack, said search dogs picked up her father's scent in the area of Murray Hill and Mansell drives.
Her father was spotted by neighbors along Murray Hill about 10 a.m. Wednesday and again on Mansell about 2 p.m. When searchers arrived, however, he was gone from both areas, she explained.
Harnack said the dogs tracked Rowbottom's scent back to the house. He was found in the coal cellar in the basement about 4 p.m. He had re-entered the house through the back door.
Harnack said the basement had been checked several times and he wasn't there.
Rowbottom said her father is in the hospital's intensive care unit, where he's being treated for cuts and bruises.
