INSIDE THE ROPES | Notes from Squaw Creek Country Club
First withdrawal: Soo Young Kim of the Republic of Korea was the first LPGA player to withdraw from the tournament on Monday. She was replaced by Sunny Lee, who was No. 1 on the alternates list.
Good moves: Jen Hanna and Clarissa Childs were listed No. 9 and No. 12 on the alternates list and more than likely would not have made the tournament field if they hadn't finished first and second in Monday's qualifier.
Still have hope: Kim Freeman, Leigh Ann Mills and Ashley Winn, who all failed Monday to qualify for the tournament, still have a shot to get into the event. Those three are ranked No. 2, 3 and 4 on the alternate list.
Long shot: Donna Wilkins, who has played in 10 of the 13 LPGA tournaments held in the Valley, is a very long shot to get into her 11th this season. Wilkins is listed No. 23 on the alternates list. In 10 previous tournaments here, Wilkins has failed to make the cut in every one.
Teaching pros: Three players who played in Monday's qualifying event are members of the LPGA teaching and club professional division. The three, who are also listed on the alternate list, are Faith Egli, Cindy Miller and Karen Bennett.
Final Shootout participant: Two-time Giant Eagle champion Tammie Green will be the 10th and final participant in the Butler Wick Shootout today at 4 p.m. at Squaw Creek Country Club. Green will be joined by defending champion Mi Hyun Kim, two-time champion Dorothy Delasin, Natalie Gulbis, Danielle Ammaccapane, Beth Bauer, Janice Moodie, Michelle Redman, Helen Alfredsson and Donna Andrews.
Course is wet: According to Squaw Creek Country Club greens superintendent Lou Greco, three-quarters of an inch of rain fell on the golf course Sunday night. Greco said that he was amazed that the greens are still rolling at a speed of 10.5 on the stimp meter, which is the rate that the LPGA wants its greens to be.--Pete Mollica
