PREP SOFTBALL Pancake, Naumoff, Olive are selected first-team All-Ohio
Eleven area players were picked to the first team of the Northeast Ohio district.
Boardman High pitcher Jennifer Pancake, Poland outfielder Katie Naumoff and Mineral Ridge infielder Katie Olive have been awarded first-team All-Ohio honors by the Ohio High School Fast-Pitch Softball Coaches Association.
Eleven high school players from the Mahoning Valley were named to the first team of the Northeast Ohio district. Another seven were named to the district second team, while three received honorable mention.
Behind Pancake's (20-2) arm, the Division I Spartans were consistently voted the No. 1 team in the state in the coaches' weekly poll.
The Spartan senior also excelled at the plate and was voted first team All-Steel Valley Conference.
Best hitter
Poland coach Reid Lamport says Naumoff, his senior right-fielder, is the best hitter his Div. II program has had in more than 10 years.
Naumoff's 43 hits this season produced a .478 batting average, a .548 on-base percentage and a four-year varsity average of .408. She was a unanimous first-team All-Metro Athletic Conference selection in 2002 and this spring.
Olive helped the Div. III Rams to a 19-7 record. In a sectional final, regional qualifier Ursuline needed an extra inning to oust Mineral Ridge, 4-3.
In Div. I, Boardman senior outfielder Audrey Martinko joins Pancake on the district first-team list, while second baseman Jaclyn Corroto, a junior, was named to the second team.
In Div. II, West Branch outfielder Ellie Geiger joins Naumoff on the district's first team.
Poland senior pitcher Jessica Lamport and junior shortstop Steffi Graf were named to the second team as was Champion catcher Jessica Carpenter. Champion's Beth Rowland received honorable mention.
Gehring named
In Div. III, Mineral Ridge sophomore pitcher Kaili Gehring joins Olive on the district first team. Also on it are Ursuline senior catcher Ali Vitello and Columbiana catcher Cara Hardenbrook.
On the second team are Mineral Ridge catcher Sarah Stark, Ursuline shortstop Courtney Davidson and Columbiana infielder Stevie Goist.
The Clippers' Whitney Goist received honorable mention.
In Div. IV, Southington pitcher Brittney Campana, catcher Becca Derr and outfielder Brittanie Gillium made the district first team, while Liz Thomas of Warren JFK was named honorable mention.
