Padres' lead vanishes as Tribe rallies to win
Cleveland improved to 9-2 at Jacobs Field since May 16.
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Rookie Brandon Phillips hit a two-run single in Cleveland's six-run first inning Tuesday night as the Indians rallied for an 8-5 win over the San Diego Padres in the first game between the teams.
Cleveland trailed 4-0 before coming up for the first time, then quickly caught and passed the Padres.
"Our guys did a great job of coming back," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "That was the difference."
Phillips, who had just one hit in his previous 35 at-bats, capped a wild first inning of interleague play between clubs whose only other meetings came in Cactus League spring training games in Arizona.
No slump
"I wasn't in a slump," insisted the confident Phillips, who had been in a 3-for-51 slide. "I've been putting the big barrel of the bat on the ball, but they just haven't been falling in. I just couldn't get a hit."
Jake Westbrook (3-3) pitched 21/3 perfect innings for the win as the Indians improved to 9-2 at home since May 16.
David Riske worked the eighth and Danys Baez got three outs for his 13th save. Cleveland's three relievers combined to retire all 13 batters they faced.
"We did our jobs," Westbrook said. "We got outs. We put up zeros."
Brian Buchanan homered for the Padres, who dropped to an NL-worst 19-46.
The teams crammed a game's worth of action into a first inning that featured 62 pitches, 10 runs, eight hits, three walks, two errors, a wild pitch and a pitching change in 36 minutes.
San Diego got five straight hits in a seven-pitch span and took a 4-0 lead against Indians starter Billy Traber, who nonetheless took the mound for the second leading 6-4.
That's because Cleveland countered with its most productive inning of the season in the first, scoring six times off Padres starter Brian Tollberg (0-2), who got just one out.
Out of the zone
"If I do my job and throw strikes, they don't score six," Tollberg said. "I've never had that happen where I've had no command. I don't know if it was sitting so long during the half-inning or what. I'm not going to beat myself up over it, but I do feel bad."
Matt Lawton's bases-loaded walk brought in the Indians' first run, and after Ben Broussard and Casey Blake had RBIs, reliever Scott Linebrink's wild pitch scored Lawton to tie it 4-all.
Phillips, whose average had dipped below .200, then hit a two-run single that got past Gary Matthews Jr. in left field for an error.
"They didn't get many hits but we helped them out," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "The 'pen did a good job, but that first inning just killed us."
