New Wilmington to pay toward plant upgrade

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Borough council has agreed to pay $15,000 as its share to upgrade an AmpOhio electric-generating plant.
Profits from selling electricity are the borough's main source of income.
Council also learned that the borough's cable television upgrade is progressing, and by week's end, customers should be receiving 60 channels instead of 32. Borough secretary Sharon Edmiston said customers won't be billed for the additional channels until after July 1.
Council also agreed to contact the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to see what can be done about problems on Neshannock Avenue where recent paving brought the road level up to the curb, resulting in some flooding.
Council voted to oppose a cellular telephone tower proposed for the Westminster College campus. The college asked for input from council.
And council agreed to close some streets in the Main and Vine Street area for the Chamber of Commerce Arts festival scheduled for Aug. 8 to 10.
