* Go back to the turn of the 20th century with the cast of "Tintypes," a Move Over Broadway Productions show that opens at 8 p.m. in DeBartolo Executive Center Auditorium, 7601 Market St., Boardman. The story will be told through dance and songs, including "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "Grand Ole Flag." Tickets will be $12 at the door for adults and $10 for senior citizens and students. * This isn't your grandmother's instrumental music. SubArachnoid Space -- the featured band at Nyabinghi, 1229 Salt Springs Road, Youngstown -- has no vocalist. Bass, drums and guitars do all the talking, literally, as feedback is part of the band's sound. SubArachnoid Space calls its kind of music "drone rock."
* Sample international rock at the Brave Words & amp; Bloody Knuckles 6-Pack Weekend, a two-day, European-style event beginning at 6 at Odeon Concert Club, 1295 Old River Road, Cleveland. The metal music magazine Brave Words & amp; Bloody Knuckles is bringing together bands from the U.S. scene as well as abroad. Among them will be two Swedish bands -- Entombed at 10:15 p.m. and Evergrey at 8:45 p.m. Saturday.
* Contact Ticketmaster after 10 a.m. for these upcoming concerts: "Rock Never Stops" tour with Whitesnake, Slaughter, Warrant and Kip Winger, 7 p.m. July 15 at Post-Gazette Pavilion near Pittsburgh and 7:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at Tower City Amphitheater, Cleveland; The Eels (and opening act McHonky) at 8 p.m. July 25 at Cleveland's Odeon, arriving with a new album, "Shootenanny," to go with its past indie rock accomplishments (the single "Novocaine for the Soul"); rock band Grandaddy, founded by former pro skateboarder Jason Lytle, at 8 p.m. Aug. 4 at Odeon; and singer-songwriter Aimee Mann, formerly of Til Tuesday, with special guest Patty Griffin at 7 p.m. Aug. 9 at Chevrolet Amphitheatre at Station Square, Pittsburgh.
SATURDAY
* Try a musical instrument at "Musical Discovery -- It's Instrumental!" an offering at the 14th annual Parade the Circle Celebration on University Circle, Wade Oval Drive, Cleveland. Violins, violas, cellos, trumpets, trombones, keyboards and drums will be available, courtesy of Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland Music School Settlement. More than 25 organizations in the University Circle area will offer activities. Event hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. A parade will be at noon.
* Dad gets a free ride this weekend -- on the Ashtabula, Carson & amp; Jefferson Scenic Line railroad, that is. The one-hour, 12-mile ride begins at Jefferson Depot and Village, Jefferson Street, in Ashtabula County. Departure times are at 12:30, 2 and 3:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. In observance of Father's Day, dads ride for free when accompanied by their children. Tickets are $8 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and $6 for children ages 3 to 12. * It'll be metal heaven for fans of Iron Maiden, Dio and Motorhead when these three come together at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at Blossom Music Center, Cuyahoga Falls. Get tickets beginning at 10 a.m. at Ticketmaster outlets. Prices are $25 for lawn and $39.50 to $59.50 for pavilion.
* See four modern rock bands for one price when 3 Doors Down, Our Lady Peace, Seether and Shinedown play at 6:45 p.m. Aug. 15 at Chevrolet Amphitheatre, Pittsburgh. Tickets, which are $29.50, will be available after noon. Call Ticketmaster.

* Celebrate the 15th anniversary of Sandcastle Waterpark, 1000 Sandcastle Drive, West Homestead, Pa., near Pittsburgh. Besides the water slides, visitors may play games, eat cake and enjoy entertainment by Jimmy Buffett impersonator Tom Watt. All weekend, admission is free to armed forces personnel with current military identification and $9.95 for military spouses (with dependent-spouse ID cards) and their children. * The 7Up Summerfest Spectacular concert series at Mill Creek MetroParks Judge Morley Pavilion, off McCollum Road, Youngstown, will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday with the spiritually-rooted jazz and funk band SounDoctrine. Concerts will continue at 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Sept. 3. In addition, The Original Fantasys, a seven-piece show band that plays classic hits from the 1950s to 1970s, and steel drum quintet 7 Mile Isle will play at 5:30 p.m. July 27, and Average White Band will play at 7 p.m. Aug. 2. All concerts are free and picnicking is encouraged.
AHEAD
* The finals of Red Bull Wings aerial athletes competition will be Aug. 1-2 on the shores of Lake Erie near the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, East 9th Street and North Marginal Road, Cleveland. Paragliders will be judged on their ability to loop and roll, while skydivers must be quick and accurate. Paragliders will compete at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., and skydivers will compete at noon and 4 p.m. Concerts also are being planned in conjunction with the event.
