Hoover lays off nearly 100 employees

NORTH CANTON -- The budget ax fell on nearly 100 salaried employees at the Hoover Co. on Tuesday, less than a week after 400 production workers were laid off.
Kevin Waetke, spokesman for the parent company Maytag Corp., said the layoffs were effective immediately. He declined to say what departments were affected or give an exact number.
Maytag also offered some employees early retirement packages and eliminated a few open positions.
Waetke said the layoffs completed the company's immediate plans for job cuts in North Canton. Hoover blamed slumping consumer demand for the layoffs. It said all or some of the workers could be recalled.
