U.S. WEIGHTLIFTING TOURNEY Jump Stretch wins team championship

YOUNGSTOWN -- The nationals of the United States All-Round Weightlifting Association were held Saturday and Sunday at the Jump Stretch Fitness Center, with Bill Clark of Columbia, Mo., president of the USAWA, presiding.
Many national records were broken with the team trophy going to the hosts from Team Jump Stretch.
Among the spectators was Jump Stretch, Inc., founder and owner Dick Hartzell, who said, "I was as amazed as anyone here at these incredible lifting performances."
Leading the way for Team Jump Stretch was Carl LaRosa, the captain.
10-man team
He captained 10 competitors that included teenagers Joe Hunter from Chaney, Anthony Horvath, a 17-year old from Struthers, and Kiff Kinkead of Champion who is headed for Kent State.
The open lifters, along with LaRosa, were Jason Groves of Columbiana and a duo of strongmen from New Middletown, Tony DelSignore and Todd Aldan. The Masters lifters for the team were Paul Kopnisky of Poland, John McKean of Pittsburgh and Art Montini, age 75, of Aliquippa.
Kinkead set a national record in the 2-inch Vertical Bar Dead Lift for the 135-kilo weight class.
LaRosa set a pair of national marks in Saturday's Stiff-leg Dead Lift, getting 425 pounds in the 110-kilo weight class. And on Sunday, in the same weight class in the 2-inch Vertical Bar Dead Lift, LaRosa powered 305 pounds for the record.
Four records
Delsignore set four national records, getting 415 pounds in the Stiff-Leg Dead Lift in the 105-kilo weight class. Then on Sunday, DelSignore pushed up 350 pounds in the Alternate-Grip Bench Press, 260 pounds in the Cheat Curl event, and 380 pounds in the 2-inch Vertical Bar Dead Lift.
There were 33 contestants, including 80-year-old Jack Lano of Anaheim, Calif.
Lowellville resident Marian LaRosa, Carl's 63-year-old mother, lifted 170 pounds in the Stiff-Leg Dead Lift in the 60-kilo weight class for a national record.
Bill Spayd, 28, of Allentown, Pa., put up 515 pounds in Hack Lift in the 105-kilo weight class for a national mark. Then Spayd reached 380 pounds in the 2-inch Vertical Bar Dead Lift, sharing the record-breaker with DelSignore.
John Monk, from Lebanon, Pa., tied one mark and set another. He tied a national mark, getting 180 pounds for the Press with Heels Together in the 70-kilo weight class. And on Sunday, Monk pushed up 270 pounds in the Alternate-Grip Bench Press to reach a national mark.
