STONEBORO, Pa. -- It's time to gear up for the Great Stoneboro Fair, literally, for those who want to compete in the demolition derby.
Applications for entry into the derby at this year's fair will be available on Tuesday, according to Shirley Umstead, publicity director for the fair.
The demolition derby will be 7:30 p.m. Aug. 28 and 29. There is room for 50 drivers each evening, Umstead said, and the spots will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.
"Last year we filled up [the spots] in two weeks for the first night and three weeks for the second," said Umstead.
The entry fee is $25 per driver, per night, cash or money order only. Drivers can sign up for one or both nights.
Cars must be full-size vehicles and drivers and pit personnel must be 16 or older. Drivers and pit personnel under 18 must have a notarized release signed by a parent or guardian submitted with their applications.
What winners get
Prizes, including cash and trophies, will be awarded for first, second and third place at each evening's event. The cash amounts are determined by the number of entries, Umstead said.
The derby is sponsored and conducted by Nationwide Demolition Derby, a professional derby organization located in Zanesville, Ohio, to give amateur drivers a chance to compete, according to Umstead.
The applications are available at NAPA Auto Parts on Pa. Route 19 and United Auto Parts on West Venango Street, both in Mercer; Stoneboro Distributing Co. on Pa. Route 62 and Gilliland's Service Station at 1162 Walnut St., both in Stoneboro; and Sandy Lake Auto Parts, 5327 Lake Street, Sandy Lake. Applications are also available by calling the fair office at (724) 376-2852.
They must be returned to the Fair Association by mailing to P. O. Box 215, Stoneboro, Pa. 16153.
