Kelly captures women's pentathlon crown



COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- Mickey Kelly came from behind in the last event and won the women's modern pentathlon national championship Sunday.
Kelly, a member of the Army's World Class Athlete Program, started the final event, a 3-kilometer cross-country run, one minute behind leader Monica Fling. She overtook Fling and Mary Beth Iagorshvili, the second-place finisher, halfway through the course on an uphill portion.
Kelly finished 32 seconds and 128 points -- 5,176 to 5,048 -- ahead of Iagorashvili.
The pentathlon also involves pistol shooting, fencing, a 200-meter freestyle swim, and horse riding.
In individual events, Kelly was ninth in shooting (167 points), tied for seventh in fencing (888 points), fourth in swimming (2:31.22 for 1,108 points), and fourth in riding (1,172 points). She was first in running with a time of 12:03, worth 1,068 points.
Iagorashvili placed first in fencing, going 22-8 in bouts, and first in swimming with a time of 2:24.72.
