AUSTINTOWN Road where trash is dumped to be closed
AUSTINTOWN -- Township officials will erect a locked gate on Bundy Road next week in an effort to end illegal dumping.
"It's really a mess down there," township Administrator Michael Dockry said. Trustees voted to close the road Monday night at the request of the Mahoning and Trumbull county boards of health.
There are no occupied structures on the short, dirt-and-gravel road off North Meridian Road at the Mahoning-Trumbull county line.
The road is barely wide enough for a car, and it's blocked near North Meridian by a fallen utility pole.
The road is lined by weeds, trees, some discarded construction material, furniture and other goods. At the west end of the road is a field and a vacant two-story building. At the east end are the last two walls of a collapsed cinder-block building, as well as a few trailers and a pile of wood pallets.
Dockry said the township recently received an opinion from the county prosecutor stating that it could close the road.
