VIENNA -- Fourteen more Air Force reservists assigned to the 910th Airlift Wing's Security Forces Squadron are expected to return to Youngstown Air Reserve Station at 9:30 p.m. today after 20 months on active duty status, including nearly seven months at Prince Sultan Air Base, Saudi Arabia.
After this group returns home, only one reservist from the 910th Security Forces Squadron will remain deployed. However, the 910th Airlift Wing will still have about 270 members deployed to locations throughout the world.
The Security Forces Squadron provides force protection for the 910th's C-130 aircraft and personnel; and functions similarly to a municipal police department, working closely with local, county and state police agencies.
Bogus police-fund calls
CAMPBELL -- City police are warning residents that telephone solicitors claiming to be collecting funds to support local law enforcement are bogus.
Since Thursday, several residents have received calls from a person claiming to be raising money for the Campbell Police Department, said Gus Sarigianopoulos. "We do not raise funds that way. Anyone who gets one of those calls should call us," he said.
Assault-gun ban
YOUNGSTOWN -- There will be public hearings from 2:20 to 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in city council chambers on legislation that would ban possession or sale of assault-type guns in the city. City council has been considering the legislation since January. The city and county health commissioners recently urged council to enact the law. Gun advocates support enforcing laws, not enacting new ones.
Burglars steal safe
STRUTHERS -- Police are searching for burglars who stole a safe containing some $300 from the concession stand at Cene Park. Park employees told police they discovered the door to the concession stand open, cabinets and drawers open, food on the floor and the safe missing about 7:15 a.m. Sunday. There were no signs of forced entry and security tapes did not immediately reveal anything out of the ordinary, the police report says. The gray metal safe is about 16 inches high, 16 inches wide and 8 inches deep. It contained one-dollar bills, five-dollar bills and quarters. Police said the concession stand was last seen intact about midnight Saturday.
Guard at lake assaulted
STRUTHERS -- A security guard at Hamilton Lake told police he was assaulted by three juveniles around 2:30 p.m. Sunday after he caught them swimming. According to the police report, the guard was making a routine check of the pay-to-fish lake when he spotted several juveniles in the water. The guard told police he collected the swimmers' clothing and told them to have their parents come to collect them. The juveniles then attempted to take their belongings by force, the report states, and the guard lost his glasses in the scuffle. Then, the guard told police, one of the juveniles picked up his glasses, bent them in half and threw them away.
Car strikes, injures man
BOARDMAN -- Richard Slagle, 44, of Boardman, was in critical condition today in St. Elizabeth Health Center after being struck by a car Monday night as he walked across U.S. Route 224, just east of Market Street, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The driver, Michael Edwards, 20, of Boardman was westbound at 9:40 p.m. when his car struck Slagle, the patrol said. The accident remains under investigation.
Sex offense in Boardman
BOARDMAN -- Township police are investigating a sex offense that happened at 1 a.m. Sunday. According to police reports, a 45-year-old township woman told police her 46-year-old date had committed an act of sexual imposition against her. Police would not specify what the act was but are looking to question the man.
South Avenue robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- A gunman grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash from the register at Ally Food Market on South Avenue around 11 a.m. Monday after firing two shots inside the store and hitting the owner on the head with the gun, reports show. The robber then ran east on Avondale Avenue. The store owner told police the suspect had been in the store buying cigarettes about 30 minutes before the robbery.
