PREP SOFTBALL Mantua victorious in D-II title game



Springfield failed to win a second-straight state title.

ASHLAND-- Brittany Vanderink had three hits and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth to lead Mantua Crestwood to a 4-2 victory over defending champions Springfield Kenton Ridge, capturing the Division II state softball title Saturday.
The game was tied at one in the bottom of the fifth inning when Vanderink singled, advanced to second on a fielder's choice and scored an unearned run on an error.
The Red Devils (32-2) scored two more runs in the inning, making it 4-1.
Kelsey Beers scored on an illegal pitch for Kenton Ridge (33-2) in the sixth.
Stephanie Moore got the win, giving up two runs on seven hits and striking out five.
Jenna Binz gave up eight hits and four runs, one of them earned, for the loss. She walked one and struck out three.
Division I
Jenn Woods struck out 11 and allowed two hits in a complete-game shutout as Whitehouse Anthony Wayne won its first state softball championship by beating Gahanna Lincoln 2-0 in Div. I.
Woods (24-4) walked none, allowed two runners past first base and only threw 78 pitches.
The Lions' (25-8) best chance came in the top of the sixth inning, when they got runners on first and second with no outs before Woods induced back-to-back popups.
The Generals (27-5) got a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Sarah Meyer and a run in the sixth on a triple by Tracy Lehman and a sacrifice fly by Leslie Everhart.
Division III
Calli Coppus went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs as Sycamore Mohawk won its first state softball championship by beating Convoy Crestview 6-1 in Div. III.
Danelle Kirian also had two RBIs and Kristyn Tooley and Jodi Calmes each drove in a run for the Warriors (30-1).
Kristell Johnson drove in the only run for the Knights (27-2). She had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning after Kristin Eickholt led off the inning with a triple.
Aubrey Walton (24-0) allowed six hits in seven innings for the win. Eickholt (20-1) took the loss, allowing six runs -- none earned -- on nine hits. She struck out seven.
