PHOENIX Diamondbacks pull out 5-3 victory over Indians
Shea Hillenbrand's two-run triple in the fifth sparked Arizona.
PHOENIX (AP) -- Shea Hillenbrand wasn't worried when Arizona fell behind 3-0 in the second inning. He figured the Diamondbacks had the right stuff to come back.
Hillenbrand hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning, rallying the Diamondbacks to a 5-3 win over the Cleveland Indians and former teammate Brian Anderson on Saturday.
"When you string some at-bats together and score some runs, first or ninth inning doesn't matter," said Hillenbrand, acquired on May 29 from Boston. "When you've got a lot of veteran players, who know how to play the game, they're not going to let you get down."
Junior Spivey drove in the final run with an RBI double off Terry Mulholland in the seventh, ending a string of 31 consecutive innings without an earned run by the Cleveland bullpen.
Alex Cintron, who started two rallies with leadoff singles, and Robby Hammock had sacrifice flies.
Good relief pitching
Stephen Randolph (1-0) allowed three walks but no hits or runs in two innings of relief. Andrew Good pitched two scoreless innings.
Good worked out of a jam in the seventh after giving up singles to Omar Vizquel and Jody Gerut, getting Milton Bradley on a groundout and striking out pinch-hitter Ben Broussard and Casey Blake.
Jose Valverde, who earned his first major league save Wednesday against the White Sox, struck out the side in the ninth for his second save.
Hammock, a rookie, was impressed by the all-rookie pitching effort.
"It's just exciting to see, even for myself," said Hammock, who has three of his seven career RBIs in the last two games. "Guys are stepping up because people are down."
The turnover continued after the game, when the Diamondbacks sent Edgar Gonzalez, who started Friday night's 6-3 loss to Cleveland, to Triple-A Tucson.
The move opened up a spot for Brandon Webb, who will start today's final game of the interleague series.
"I told him that he will be back," manager Bob Brenly said about Gonzalez. "We were very impressed with what we saw from Edgar, and if he can make these adjustments that we're going to ask him to make, I think he'll be even better."
Anderson (3-6), who pitched five seasons for the Diamondbacks, gave up four runs on eight hits in 42/3 innings.
"I don't want to say mixed," Anderson said about his emotions. "But they were very anxious, waiting for this game to come and get out there. It was an interesting day, I'll tell you that much."
Fourth interleague loss
Tim Laker went 3-for-4, including two doubles, and drove in two runs for Cleveland. The Indians lost for the fourth time in five interleague games.
Arizona starter John Patterson allowed three runs in the second inning, when he managed only 21 strikes in 39 pitches.
Patterson got into trouble by walking Bradley and hitting Blake. Both scored when Laker drove a pitch into the gap in right-center for a double, and he scored on a single by Matt Lawton.
Arizona got within 3-2 on the sacrifice flies by Cintron and Hammock.
The first run was unearned after Laker, a backup catcher, grabbed Patterson's attempted sacrifice bunt and tried to get Chad Moeller at second. His bad throw got past Vizquel and allowed Moeller to reach third with none out.
In the Diamondbacks' fourth, Luis Gonzalez, Hillenbrand and Danny Bautista singled with none out, but Cleveland got out of the jam with just one run when Lyle Overbay, pinch-hitting for Patterson, grounded into a double play.
Anderson lasted only two more outs.
