GUND ARENA Melvin provides offensive spark as Rockers defeat Sting, 67-57
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Chasity Melvin scored 12 points, and Lucienne Berthieu had a career-high 11 Saturday as the Cleveland Rockers beat the Charlotte Sting, 67-57.
Cameroon native Berthieu, who came into the game averaging 2.5 points a game, shot 5-for-6 from the field in a career-high 17 minutes.
Melvin added seven rebounds for Cleveland, which has won three in a row after a season-opening loss to Los Angeles. Forward Deanna Jackson added 10 points.
The Rockers went on a 10-0 run in the second half, holding the Sting (4-2) scoreless for 5:35, to take a 51-42 lead.
The lead got as large as 14 after Cleveland point guard Helen Darling made two free throws with 1:05 left to make the score 62-48.
Cleveland led 32-27 at halftime, but the Sting opened the second half with a 9-1 run. Point guard Dawn Staley made two 3-pointers, as Charlotte took a 36-33 lead.
Staley and Kelly Miller each had 11 points for the Sting, who had a four-game winning streak snapped. Guard Andrea Stinson had 10 points.
The Rockers were 22 of 37 from the foul line, compared to Charlotte's 13 of 15. The Sting also turned the ball over 15 times.
