COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Brian McBride's sliding goal in the 85th minute lifted the Columbus Crew to a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night.
McBride beat defender Chris Roner and goalkeeper Pat Onstad to a loose ball in the penalty area and slipped a shot inside the post for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Columbus (4-3-3) played the last 12 minutes down a man after midfielder Diego Walsh picked up his second yellow card for a hard foul in the middle of the field.
Agoos nearly made up for his mistake in the 87th minute by sending a long pass to substitute Jamil Walker, but Walker's shot went right to goalkeeper Jon Busch.
Busch earned his third shutout of the year.
San Jose dropped to 4-2-2.
