Ohalek signswith Marlins
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State pitcher Corey Ohalek signed a free-agent contract with the Florida Marlins Friday, YSU coach Mike Florak has announced.
Ohalek will report to Jamestown, N.Y., to play with the Jammers of the New York-Penn League.
Ohalek, a 5-10 lefthander from Steubenville, went 6-5 this season with a 4.97 ERA in 13 starts and had seven complete games.
In a team-high 83 1/3 innings, Ohalek struck out 67 hitters while walking only 17.
He also hurled two shutouts in his senior campaign, blanking Detroit and Binghamton.
Over the course of his career, Ohalek set school records with 22 wins and 320 innings pitched. He finished with 66 appearances, 18 complete games and had 208 strikeouts while only walking 87.

Scrappers setExpress game
NILES -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers and the Youngstown Express will play a seven-inning exhibition game at Cafaro Field on June 15.
Gates open at 4 p.m. and the free game is set for 6 p.m.
The Scrappers open the season June 17 at the Batavia Muckdogs and the home opener is June 20 against Auburn.
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers Backers will hold their annual picnic at Cafaro Field on June 14 at 5:30 p.m. The event will include player introduction, dinner, a presentation of scholarship awards to area students, silent auction, 50/50 raffle and an autograph session.

Marenkovicearns honors
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Meghan Marenkovic, an Ursuline High graduate, recently concluded her freshman season as a member of the St. Mary's College softball team.
A starter at third base and second base, Marenkovic batted .389 and recorded a fielding percentage of .942. She also won the coaches' award for the best all-around player.
St. Mary's finished with a 17-17 record.
Poland's Grafhired as coach
NORFOLK, Va. -- Allison Graf, a graduate of Poland High and Mount Union College, has accepted a position on the athletic staff of Virginia Wesleyan College.
Graf will be an assistant women's basketball coach and marketing intern.
She is a 2003 graduate of Mount Union with a bachelor's degree in Sports Management. Graf averaged 14.6 points per game as a senior on the Mt. Union basketball team.

Polamalusidelined
PITTSBURGH -- Given an opportunity to show his stuff, safety Troy Polamalu has instead been sidelined by a hamstring injury.
The Pittsburgh Steelers' first-round pick missed the past week of coaching sessions with an injury to the same hamstring that troubled him throughout his senior season at the University of Southern California.
Polamalu opened coaching sessions with the Steelers' first team, due to an injury to veteran strong safety Mike Logan.

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Landon Powell homered and drove in three runs, and Michael Campbell hit a go-ahead two-run single as South Carolina beat North Carolina 5-4 in the opening game of the super regionals.
Gamecocks ace David Marchbanks (15-2) allowed four runs in the first two innings, but held the Tar Heels to two hits over the next four innings. Chris Hernandez got his second save of the season after allowing two hits in three innings.
Cal State Fullertondefeats ASU
FULLERTON, Calif. -- Jason Windsor and Chad Cordero combined on a five-hitter as Cal State Fullerton beat Arizona State, 5-1, in the first game of their super regional.
The Sun Devils entered leading Division I with a .352 batting average and 10.35 runs per game, but Windsor (10-2), a junior walk-on, scattered five hits, allowed one run, struck out five and walked one in seven innings.
Baylor wins
BATON ROUGE, La. -- Steven White scattered seven hits and struck out nine in eight innings, and Chris Durbin's RBI single keyed a three-run eighth as Baylor beat Louisiana State, 4-1.
White (9-4) walked two and allowed one run, and Ryan LaMotta got three outs as Baylor (45-21) beat LSU (43-20-1) for the first time in five meetings. The Bears have won 17 of their last 21.
