PA. PARKS McConnell's Mill, Moraine



Trees, T-shirts and backpacking techniques will be themes of programs offered this month at Moraine and McConnell's Mill state parks, near Portersville, Pa.
MCCONNELL'S MILL
"Who Lives in Hell's Run?" A naturalist will conduct this program, which starts at noon Sunday in the Hell's Hollow parking lot. Participants will have an opportunity to learn more about animals that live in and near the nearby creek.
"Make Your Own T-Shirt": This Father's Day-related event will allow people to bring a cotton T-shirt that has been washed without fabric softener and design a nature theme on it. The hourlong program begins at 3:30 p.m. June 15 at the Old Mill Courtyard.
"Corn Grinding Demonstrations": These half-hour demonstrations, beginning at 1 and 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at the Old Mill, show how millers used power from Slippery Rock Creek to grind corn into cornmeal during the mid-1800s.
"Historic Grist Mill Tours": These 45-minute tours start at 2 and 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, and take participants through the history of how grain was processed and transformed into flour. Meet at the Old Mill entrance.
MORAINE STATE PARK
"Natural Symbols of Pennsylvania": A naturalist will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Point picnic area on the South Shore to discuss the various symbols chosen to represent the Keystone State and how they were selected.
"Backpacking 101": This hourlong introduction to backpacking, starting at 3 p.m. June 14 at the Five Points Trailhead on the North Shore, will explore various hiking techniques, campsite setup, trip planning and items to bring.
"Tree ID": A naturalist will discuss methods people can use to identify various trees year-round, as well as why trees are important. Meet at 1 p.m. June 15 at the Sunken Garden Trailhead on the South Shore.
