HUBBARD -- While pupils are on summer recess here, work will proceed on three major school-maintenance projects totaling more than $900,000.
The work entails replacing all windows at the high school, eliminating flooding at the stadium and upgrading boilers at Reed Middle School.
Superintendent James J. Herrholtz said $589,000 will be spent on the blue-tinted windows, designed to conserve energy. He said the current windows date to the 1950s and early 1960s.
Work should be completed by the beginning of the heating season, he said.
The work also includes insulating the roof.
The project is being financed through an asset pool, a consortium of school districts that can borrow money at a low interest rate, Herrholtz explained.
The work won't add to the district's debt, the superintendent noted, because it is retiring a bond.
Stadium project
Because of flooding at the stadium, an estimated $230,000 will be spent on a drainage system. The work includes fencing and paving.
Like the windows, the stadium work will be financed through the asset pool.
Herrholtz said the flooding on the field is threatening the foundation of the new stands.
"We're always wet," Herrholtz said, noting football players stand in water on the sidelines.
Bids will be open June 18, with the work to be completed by Aug. 15.
New boilers
At the middle school, about $100,000 will be spent on boilers.
Herrholtz said the current boiler was installed in 1958.
The district is buying a new boiler and two 3-year-old boilers from Lowellville School District.
The used steam boilers are like new and will be converted to the school's hot water system, Herrholtz said.
The work will be done before pupils return to the classrooms in the fall.
