PNC PARK Reboulet helps Bucs rally to beat Red Sox
He scored the tie-breaking run on Kenny Lofton's fly ball in the 5-4 victory.
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Jeff Reboulet got the breaks he needed to help the Pittsburgh Pirates end a three-game losing skid.
Reboulet stole his first base in almost three years, moved to third on Abraham Nunez's single and scored on Kenny Lofton's tie-breaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning as the Pirates beat the Boston Red Sox 5-4 on Thursday night.
Nunez's hit snapped his 0-for-14 streak as a pinch-hitter.
With Nunez hitting against reliever Ramiro Mendoza (1-2), the 39-year-old Reboulet, who reached base on a swinging bunt down the third-base line, stole his first base since August 2000. He was relieved to contribute something, especially after leaving the bases loaded in the Pirates' two-run first.
"I got a little lucky hit, and then we had the hit-and-run on," Reboulet said. "I'm not going to be stealing bases -- not at my age."
Lofton has big game
With the go-ahead run at third, Lofton knew what to do.
"I was just trying to put it into play, get it anywhere in the outfield," said Lofton, who homered in the fourth, scored twice and reached base three times.
Brian Boehringer (3-1) got two outs for the victory, the Pirates' first home win in 10 interleague games.
Boston's Trot Nixon hit his third home run in three games, leading off the seventh with a shot that tied it at 4 off Scott Sauerbeck. It was his sixth home run of the season.
Pittsburgh starter Jeff Suppan, who has lost five of his last six decisions, allowed four hits over six innings. He retired the first 10 batters he faced before Todd Walker hit a bloop single to extend his career-high hitting streak to 20 games, the longest active streak in the majors.
"I was just going out there and trying to keep them from having big innings," said Suppan, who left the game with a 4-3 lead. "They're very good hitters, and I felt for the most part my pitch selection was good."
Ramirez homers
Suppan allowed a home run to Manny Ramirez later in the fourth. Ramirez, who struck out three times, is 12-for-22 (.545) with three homers and 10 RBIs in the last five games.
The Pirates took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI singles by Brian Giles and Randall Simon.
Pittsburgh added to the lead in the third inning when Aramis Ramirez extended his career-high hitting streak to 18 games with a single and scored on Jack Wilson's sacrifice fly.
