Hearing in death delayed
Hearing in death delayed
NILES -- Court proceedings for a Warren man charged in the death earlier this year of a Greenville, Ohio, man were postponed.
Roy Walls, 27, of Severn Court Southeast, was set to appear Friday in Niles Municipal Court for a preliminary hearing on an involuntary manslaughter charge in the Jan. 15 death of 43-year-old Larry Marker. Acting Judge John R. Gargano delayed the hearing until 9 a.m. July 2.
Walls is accused of getting into a fight with Marker on Nov. 25, 2002, at Buffalo Wild Wings near the Eastwood Mall. Police say the men were arguing about NASCAR when Walls punched Marker, who was knocked unconscious when his head hit the floor.
Marker never regained consciousness, and an autopsy investigation revealed he died of seizures and a staph infection in the brain, results of the head injury and coma.
Walls remains free on a $5,000 personal bond.
Student wins used car
LISBON -- Anthony Pascuzzi is the winner of a used car given away annually by the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center to seniors who achieve good attendance.
Pascuzzi, a computer networking student who didn't miss a day this school year, is the son of Nicholas and Candace Pascuzzi. His home school district is Beaver.
Pascuzzi won a 1994 Cavalier that the school district bought from a salvage yard for $1,600.
Money to buy the car came from a grant program intended to encourage attendance.
The school's auto-collision and repair students fixed up the car and painted it.
Students who missed no more than five days were eligible for a drawing for the car.
No deal on nurse pact
EAST LIVERPOOL -- A bargaining session ordered by a federal mediator failed to produce a settlement in a labor dispute between East Liverpool City Hospital and striking nurses.
The two sides met for about five hours Friday, but no issues were resolved, said Ruth Ann Mullen, a spokeswoman for the East Liverpool Nurses Association. The union represents 177 nurses at the hospital.
No new talks are set, Mullen said.
Key issues separating the sides include wages, health insurance costs and mandatory overtime.
The nurses went on strike Sunday after their three-year contract expired.
The hospital remains open, but on a limited basis.
Kiwanis sponsors mixer
WARREN -- A free mixer next week aims to educate potential members about the benefits of becoming a Trumbull County Kiwanian.
From 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, the nine Kiwanis clubs in the county are sponsoring a Get to Know Kiwanis mixer at DiLucia's, Elm Road.
Finger foods and a cash bar will be offered. Each club in the division will staff an information table. Representatives of the Children's Rehabilitation Center in Warren and Tod Children's Hospital in Youngstown will speak at 6 p.m. about Kiwanis involvement with their organizations.
"We'd like to offer individuals looking for an opportunity for community service to see if Kiwanis would be a good fit for them," said Jean Forbes, Division 25 lieutenant governor and a member of the Warren club. "Service to children is our top priority. Depending upon where people work or live, there's sure to be a Kiwanis club nearby."
Reservations are suggested for people interested in attending the mixer. Call (330) 856-2631 to reserve a seat.
Rape verdict upheld
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Ohio 7th District Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of Jose Manuel Rosado, who is serving life in prison in the rape of two young girls.
Rosado, 39, of Lanterman Road, was convicted by a jury in December 2001 of 19 counts of rape. Judge Robert Lisotto of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court sentenced him to life in prison without parole. Rosado appealed, arguing there were mistakes made during his trial, but the appellate court disagreed.
Authorities said Rosado had sexual contact with two young girls he knew. The victims are now teenagers but were 6 and 7 when the assaults started. They testified during the trial that Rosado would make them watch pornographic movies with him, then imitate with him what was happening in the movie. He also made them play strip poker.
