Erie parishioners raise $36.5 million
ERIE, Pa. (AP) -- The Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie will celebrate its 150th anniversary on Sunday with more money than expected.
Parishioners raised $36.5 million during a two-year capital campaign, about $1.5 million more than the target set by the diocese.
More than half the money raised will remain in the parishes for immediate and long-range capital projects, said Bishop Donald Trautman.
"They have given a gift which will have a lasting impact on the church in northwestern Pennsylvania," he said.
Money raised in the campaign will also be used to fund endowments for Catholic charities and educational facilities.
The diocese will hold Mass in celebration of their 150th anniversary and the successful campaign Sunday.
The diocese represents Catholic churches in 13 counties, including Mercer and Crawford.
