CANTON -- Warren native Tony Hanshaw will be featured in a 12-round fight during a seven-bout program July 11 at the Canton Civic Center.
Two championship fights will be the main event co-features.
Hanshaw returns after a layoff of almost a year layoff to fight for the International Boxing Association Continental super middleweight championship with an opponent to be named.
Promoter Tom Vacca said, "Tony has never cared who was in the ring with him, as long as there was a fight to be fought, because boxing is truly his life."
At the press conference announcing the fight, Hanshaw said, "I will be ready," a mouthful for a 15-0 fighter who has stopped 10 opponents, but hasn't been in a ring since winning a 12-round decision over Warren's Etianne Whitaker last July.
Been training since March
Hanshaw lives with his uncle, Sonny Russell, in Massillon and has been training since March.
His initial sparring will begin next week at the Rubber City Boxing Club in Akron under the eye of trainer John Russell.
Russell also has been away from the ring wars due to an automobile accident which nearly took his life. A one-car crash at Marco Island, Fla., on March 8 broke his back and had the man who trained Buster Douglas to the greatest upset in heavyweight championship history, on life support for four days.
"When I heard the report of the accident, I thought John was gone and now I am elated to have him back because he is the best trainer I have had," Hanshaw said.
Ward also on card
A 10-round fight will have Vonda Ward of Cleveland defending her IBA Female Heavyweight title against Martha Salazar. Ward is 17-0 with 15 knockouts. Salazar is 6-1 with one knockout.
Filling out the card will be several bouts designated for six or eight rounds with one of those a battle of super middleweights with Jose Spearman (20-5) from Columbus going against Dallas Vargas from Toledo.
Managed by Youngstown's Pat Nelson, Vargas is 10-0 with seven knockouts after a 175-fight amateur career that had him winning a National Golden Gloves championship.
