CLEVELAND -- James Jackson, who lost his starting running back job with the Cleveland Browns last season, has signed a one-year contract extension.
Jackson has one year remaining on the three-year contract he signed after being selected in the third round of the 2001 draft. The Browns did not disclose terms of the extension that will keep Jackson with the team through 2004.
Jackson was the Browns' leading rusher as a rookie, when he had 10 starts and 554 yards in 195 carries, a 2.8-yard average.
Jackson said he was pleased to be staying with the team. Coach Butch Davis called Jackson a "productive player on both our offense and special teams."
Jamel White and William Green, Cleveland's top draft pick in 2002, carried the rushing load last season. Jackson, in a reserve role, carried the ball 12 times for 54 yards.
On Tuesday, White signed a four-year contract to stay with the Browns.
Panthers
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Wide receiver Kevin Dyson tore his left Achilles' tendon in practice Wednesday and could be out for the year, throwing a severed crimp in the Carolina Panthers' attempt to upgrade their offense.
The 6-foot-1, 208-pound Dyson was part of an off-season overhaul of a Panthers offense that finished next-to-last in the league in total yards and third from last in points scored.
Wide receivers Ricky Proehl and Dyson, running back Stephen Davis, quarterback Jake Delhomme and offensive lineman Doug Brzezinski all were signed to help the team improve on its 7-9 record last season.
Dyson is best known for coming up a yard short of the goal line after catching what might have been the tying touchdown pass in the 2000 Super Bowl for Tennessee against St. Louis.
He will be placed on the physically unable to perform list in the next couple of days, general manager Marty Hurney said. That means Dyson will miss at least the first six weeks of the season.
At that point, the Panthers will have three weeks to determine whether to activate Dyson or place him on injured reserve.
Dyson was scheduled to have surgery today.
Bears
LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- All-Pro linebacker Brian Urlacher has agreed to a new nine-year deal that will keep him with the Chicago Bears through the 2011 season.
Terms of the deal were not immediately available.
Urlacher, the ninth overall pick in the 2000 draft, has 527 career tackles. He's led the Bears in stops in each of his first three seasons, averaging 175 a year.
With 214 tackles last season, he set a franchise record, shattering the previous mark of 190 set by Hall of Famer Dick Butkus in 1972. He won rookie of the year honors in 2000.
In addition to being Chicago's top defensive player, Urlacher has quickly become a fan favorite.
He's earned Pro Bowl honors each season and was the top defensive vote-getter by fans last year. His jersey was the top seller in the NFL last season.
He was scheduled to make $4.1 million over the final two years of his original five-year contract.
