WARREN -- Commissioner Joseph Angelo has told police he has no idea who stole $4,000 from his home.
According to a May 23 police report, Angelo said the money was in a pocket of a pair of his pants that were hanging in his bedroom closet.
He believes the money was stolen the weekend of April 26.
"I can't believe it," Angelo said. "I had the money in my campaign account, and I wanted to take it out and put it in a CD or a money market.
"I hadn't decided where I was gong to put it."
Angelo said he did not file a report with police sooner because he spent time searching for the money.
"We have a big dog, but I don't know, maybe we were out walking the dog or something, when I got robbed," Angelo said.
"I didn't tell anyone I was taking the money out. I never have that kind of money in the house."
No claim filed
An insurance claim has not been filed, Angelo said.
"Now I have to come up with this money. I can't believe it," Angelo said. "I've changed all the locks in my house."
Warren police are not investigating the matter.
"There is not a whole lot to investigate," said Chief John Mandopoulos.
Norma Williams, director of the Trumbull County Board of Elections, said she was unaware of the theft until told by reporters.
She said she doesn't know if Angelo would be required to pay back his campaign account, although that is her assumption.
Board rules don't require Angelo to tell them about the theft until annual campaign finance reports are due after the end of the year.
"We will have to get some guidance from the secretary of state's office," Williams said.
"We have never had to deal with something like this."
