Award at justice summit
YOUNGSTOWN -- A team of pupils from Volney Rogers Junior High School was one of five to receive an outstanding project award at the ninth annual Ohio Youth for Justice Summit in Columbus. The pupils' project offered a solution to tobacco use in the community. They competed against 27 other schools in the program, which was directed by the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education.
3 attend scholars seminar
ASHLAND -- Springfield Local High School students Danielle Champney and Carrie Davis and Cardinal Mooney High School student Sarah Kelley were among 57 academically talented high school juniors to attend the 2003 Teacher Education Scholars Seminar at Ashland University.
Champney is the daughter of Edward and Paulette Champney of New Middletown. Davis is the daughter of John and Diane Davis of New Middletown. Kelley is the daughter of Barb Kelley of Youngstown.
Achievement awards
Several local students have won national awards through the United States Achievement Academy, give to fewer than 10 percent of secondary-school pupils. Among them are Amy Edwards of Cardinal Mooney High School, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Edwards of New Springfield, who was named an All-American Scholar; Austintown Fitch High School student Matthew Fulmer, son of Larry and Chris Fulmer of Austintown, who won English and history and government awards; and Vanessa Walsh of Edison Junior High School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Walsh of Niles, winning mathematics and science awards.
Awards for visual display
GIRARD -- High school juniors Kari Esposito and Cassie Fricker earned second place for a "Winners Bounce" Visual Display event at the Jobs for Ohio Graduates 17th annual State Career Development Conference in Columbus. They had also captured a first-place visual display award at a local conference at Kent State Trumbull Campus.

'Camp Xcape' at Malone
CANTON -- Malone College hosts "Camp Xcape" June 23 to 27 on the Canton campus. The junior high summer camp, primarily for urban youth, offers games, food, swimming and other activities. Cost is $165. Call (330) 471-8196 or email bquigley@malone.edu.
SRU classes for kids
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- A weeklong "Lights, Camera, Action!" theater day camp is offered to children ages 7 to 14 at Slippery Rock University from July 7 to 11. SRU also offers several "Enrichment Day Camp" topics for third- through fifth-graders July 14 to 18; mini-courses include Japanese language, Norse mythology, sign language, stained-glass windows, "Icky, sticky, slimy, grimy, ooey, gooey chemistry" and others.

Trumbull fair spelling bee
BAZETTA -- The 17th annual Historical Village Spelling Bee for grades one through nine will be at 1 p.m. July 10 in the Historical Village at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.
It is open to Trumbull County pupils only. They can register for the event from 10 a.m. July 8 to 12:30 p.m. July 10 at the Trumbull County Fair. Each pupil must have a parent or guardian present. Registrations can also be mailed. Include name, address, phone number, school, grade just completed, signed permission from a parent or guardian and proof of school or copy of parent's driver's license; send to: 17th Spelling Bee, P.O. Geography scholarship
YOUNGSTOWN -- The geography department at Youngstown State University recently gave $7,000 toward a scholarship endowment for high-achieving geography majors. The money will go toward the permanent endowment of the JoAnn Knapic Academic Achievement Award. Mrs. Knapic, of Youngstown, was the secretary in the geography department until she retired in 1998.
SRU-India exchange
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University has signed a faculty and student exchange agreement with Rajasthan Vidyapeeth University in Udaipur, India. The first exchange participants are expected to take classes in January.
The university has similar agreements with more than two dozens countries. The India program is expected to focus initially on education, social work, business, marketing, geology and physical therapy.

Literacy-program grants
WOOSTER -- The Buckeye Book Fair seeks applications for grants of up to $1,000 to support literacy programs in Ohio. Eligible are Ohio public school districts, parochial schools, public libraries and literacy programs. Funds must be used to buy printed materials to address a need not currently met by the applicant's program.
